As Trump urges deal, Cuban president warns that the country will defend itself ‘to the last drop of blood’
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez on Sunday reaffirmed Cuba’s resolve to defend its sovereignty “to the last drop of blood,” pushing back against mounting pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had urged Havana to reach an agreement with Washington.
Earlier, President Trump referenced Cuba in a post on Truth Social, warning the country to “make a deal, before it is too late.”
In response, Díaz-Canel rejected claims that Cuba’s ongoing economic hardship is the result of its revolutionary government. He argued that the shortages are instead caused by decades of severe U.S. sanctions, describing them as a deliberate and prolonged effort to economically suffocate the island. According to him, those who blame the Cuban Revolution for the crisis are fully aware of this reality and should be ashamed.
In another statement shared on X, the Cuban leader emphasized that Cuba remains a free, independent, and sovereign nation that takes no orders from external powers. He stressed that Cuba has not acted aggressively toward the United States but has instead endured 66 years of hostility and pressure. Díaz-Canel added that while Cuba does not seek conflict, it remains fully prepared to defend its homeland at all costs.
