Tottenham Complete Conor Gallagher Signing, Mathys Tel Seeks More Game Time
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly beaten Aston Villa to sign midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid, agreeing a transfer package worth up to €40 million (£34.6 m). Gallagher, who has made just four La Liga starts this season, is keen to return to the Premier League to boost his chances of making England’s World Cup squad. Spurs, dealing with Rodrigo Bentancur’s three-month hamstring injury, identified the 25-year-old as their primary midfield reinforcement.
Gallagher is 18 months into a five-year contract with Atlético after moving from Chelsea in 2024. Tottenham are expected to pay £25 million upfront, with potential bonuses raising the fee to £34 million, the amount Atlético initially paid Chelsea. Aston Villa had explored a loan with a purchase obligation, but Atlético preferred a permanent deal. Manchester United had also been linked with the player.
Meanwhile, Mathys Tel, who joined Tottenham permanently after an 18-month loan from Bayern Munich, is seeking more first-team minutes. Initially left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad due to the 22-player limit, Tel was added in December following Dominic Solanke’s injury. The 20-year-old forward, captain of France’s U21s, is determined to earn regular playing time and build momentum in his career.
