China Tests Quantum Technology Inside a Working Power Grid

China is testing quantum technologies in a real power-grid environment, marking another step in the country’s effort to move quantum computing and sensing beyond the laboratory.

The testing is taking place at a 220-kilovolt demonstration substation in Hefei. Researchers are examining technologies including quantum sensing, secure communications and quantum computing.

The significance of the project goes beyond experimentation. If quantum technologies can be reliably integrated into critical infrastructure, they could eventually improve areas such as monitoring, security and the management of complex energy systems.

The project also reflects the growing competition between countries to find practical applications for quantum technology.
