Chelsea Complete Signing of Emiliano Martínez From Aston Villa
Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, adding another experienced goalkeeper to their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The 33-year-old has joined Chelsea on a three-year contract after the London club agreed a deal with Aston Villa believed to be worth around £7.5 million.
Martínez became one of the world’s most recognised goalkeepers during his time with Aston Villa and Argentina. His reputation grew significantly after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he played a decisive role during the tournament.
The goalkeeper also won the Golden Glove at the World Cup and has continued to be regarded as one of the strongest goalkeepers in international football.
His move to Chelsea comes after Villa brought in Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, which contributed to Martínez becoming less central to Villa’s plans.
Chelsea’s decision to sign Martínez gives the club another experienced option in goal as the team prepares for a demanding season.
The transfer is also an important addition for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who will be looking to build a competitive squad capable of challenging across multiple competitions.
Martínez brings significant experience at both club and international level, as well as a reputation for performing under pressure.
Chelsea fans will now be watching closely to see how the Argentine goalkeeper settles into life at Stamford Bridge and whether he can establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The move is also one of the latest major developments in a busy transfer window, with Premier League clubs continuing to strengthen their squads before the new season gets fully underway.
